What is a Twitter card?

Twitter cards are meta tags that turn a plain link on Twitter/X into a rich preview with an image, title and description. The summary_large_image card shows a full-width picture and gets significantly more engagement than a bare URL.

Twitter/X falls back to Open Graph tags when twitter:* tags are missing, but adding both gives you full control — for example a different, shorter title for Twitter than for Facebook.

How to use

  1. 01Choose the card type — summary_large_image is best for most content.
  2. 02Enter your @handle, title, description and image URL.
  3. 03Click Generate Twitter card.
  4. 04Paste the tags into your <head> alongside your Open Graph tags.

Frequently asked questions

Which card type should I choose?
summary_large_image for almost everything — it shows a full-width image and gets more engagement. Use the plain summary card only when you have no good landscape image.
Do I need Twitter cards if I already have Open Graph tags?
Twitter/X falls back to OG tags, so links still work without twitter:* tags. Adding them gives you control over the card type and lets you tailor the title specifically for Twitter.
What image size does Twitter recommend?
For summary_large_image: 1200×628 pixels minimum, ratio 1.91:1, under 5 MB. For the small summary card: a square image of at least 144×144 pixels.
