What are meta tags and why do they matter for SEO?

Meta tags are HTML snippets in a page's <head> that describe the page to search engines and browsers. The two that matter most for SEO are the title tag — the clickable headline in Google results and the strongest on-page ranking signal — and the meta description, which acts as your free ad copy under that headline.

Google typically displays about 60 characters of a title and 155–160 characters of a description before truncating them with an ellipsis. This generator counts characters live as you type, so your snippets are never cut off mid-sentence.

How to use

  1. 01Enter your page title — the counter warns you past 60 characters.
  2. 02Write a meta description under 160 characters.
  3. 03Optionally add keywords, author, canonical URL and a robots policy.
  4. 04Click Generate meta tags and paste the code into your page's <head>.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?
Keep it under 60 characters. Google truncates titles at roughly 580 pixels wide, which is about 60 characters for typical text. Front-load your most important keyword.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for 150–160 characters. Google usually truncates at about 160 on desktop and slightly fewer on mobile. Write it like ad copy — it does not affect rankings directly but strongly affects click-through rate.
Do meta keywords still matter?
No. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag since 2009, and Bing treats it as a spam signal at worst. This generator includes it only for completeness — you can safely leave it empty.
What does the canonical tag do?
It tells search engines which URL is the master version of a page, preventing duplicate-content issues when the same content is reachable at multiple URLs (with/without www, with tracking parameters, etc.).
